How the government shutdown affects your EBT and food stamp (SNAP) benefits in February and March, 2019

Summary

  1. February benefits came early
    Most people got their February food stamp benefits early, around January 20th. If you got your benefits early, you will NOT get more benefits in February, so budget carefully.
  2. EBT cards will work normally
    Your EBT card will continue to work and benefits will stay active on your card in February. Benefits will not expire and stores will continue to accept EBT.
  3. You WILL get March benefits
    Yes, you WILL get more benefits in March. Different states are releasing March benefits on different dates. Check the list of states below for more information.

I did not get my February benefits early. Why not?

If you were in the middle of a renewal or recertification process and completed your paperwork on time, then you should get your February deposit on the normal schedule.


If you were not in the middle of a renewal or recertification process and didn't get your February benefits yet, then there may be a problem with your case. Please contact your case worker or local SNAP office. Expect long hold times in February.

Will I get more benefits in February?

If you got two deposits in January, then you will not get another deposit in February. Your early deposit was your February deposit. Consider setting aside that benefit until later in February to make sure they last until your next deposit.

Will my EBT card work in February?

Yes. Your EBT card will continue working in February. You should save benefits and budget carefully. Your benefits always roll over to the next month.

Will I get benefits in March? When will I get my next food stamp deposit?

Yes. You will get food stamp benefits in March, but the federal government still hasn't decided exactly when they will be deposited. Please sign up for email updates and we will let you know when we have more information about March benefits.

Are my cash (TANF) or WIC benefits affected?

Not right now. You should expect to get these benefits as usual in February.

What about other benefits like housing, Medicaid, Medicare, disability, or SSI?

Every program has different rules, but none of the other major federal benefit programs have had significant changes yet.

Social Security benefits, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are funded through September 2019 and so should not be affected by the shutdown.

Medicare and Medicaid are also fully funded, and the government has said they should not be affected by the shutdown.

Most Section 8 payments should not be affected, but some HUD housing programs could be. Check with your landlord or local housing authority for more information.

What is happening to January and February food stamp Benefits?

You will get January benefits on the normal schedule.


February benefits were already issued for most people. These are not extra benefits, so make sure to budget carefully. Check out these tips to help make your SNAP benefits stretch.

Do I have to spend all my benefits before the end of January?

No. Your EBT card will continue working in February and throughout the government shutdown. You should save benefits for next month and budget carefully. Your benefits always roll over to the next month.

What if my recertification date is in January or February?

We recommend that you file your recertification paperwork as soon as possible to ensure that you get your early deposit. States have said that their recertification processes should not be impacted.

What about my January benefits?

Your January benefits should be deposited as normal. If you are having an issue with your January benefits, please contact your case worker or call your state SNAP hotline.

When will I get my next food stamp deposit?

After your early deposit, we expect that your next benefit will be on your regular deposit date in March. However, that will only happen if the government shutdown ends by then.
